Autographs?

I’ve been putting together the packages for all of the folks who helped me out with this project.  I’ve got about 10 or so books out to these great folks.  It’s a bit odd to be signing these books, on a couple of counts.  The first thing that went through my mind was, “why would anybody want my autograph?”.

I have a few autographed books.  The most notable is 20,000 leagues under the sea, signed in pen by Jules Verne.  The book itself is a wreck and pretty much worthless, except for the sig.  The other is a Harry Potter that I got signed by J.K Rowling at a book signing.  There are a couple of others – Brad Thor comes to mind.  I do find those little scripts to make the books somehow more valuable to me, so signing books that you wrote appears to be the thing to do, and I’m doing it.

The second thing is that they don’t make books to be signed by left-handed writers.  So, I found a blank leaf opposite the title page that seems to work, but it’s pretty awkward.

The book itself is dedicated to Carroll Shelby.  The last time I saw him was a bit over a year ago.  If you’ve ever been near him, you know that he’s pretty much a rock star.  He’ll sign just about anything, but charges money for it.  All of the money goes to the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation, which provides assistance to children in need of organ transplants.  He has raised tens of millions of dollars doing that, so you can only imagine how much of his time is dedicated to signing things.  I’ll definitely have to write a blog on Carroll’s story.  He’s quite a guy.

Anyway, it’s particularly odd signing something for him.   I did that today, and I’ll post his book and one for Amy Boylan over to Shelby American tomorrow.
