The Sixth Step

Step Six: Do something.

I had a comment from a reader (who, incidentally, did not read the entire book) who said she followed the instructions in Chapter Eight (Casting) of The Physics of Success, but it didn’t happen. There are many ways to shoot yourself in the foot with regards to achievement of anything, and this person actually stopped reading the book after Chapter Nine (the explanation begins in Chapter Ten!). I’m not particularly concerned about those exact results, but I am concerned that I didn’t present the information as well as should be.

These principles work whether or not you understand them. Skipping the main point of the book will definitely reduce your chances of success, but it shouldn’t shut the door on you. When writing the book I was more concerned with why Success Principles work, not what they are. I debated not writing the chapter at all, but then I would end up with a book that had no defined subject. Unfortunately, I perhaps paid too little attention to the details. I outlined five basic steps, and discussed why they are necessary. They are spelled out in the book and elsewhere in this blog, so no need to repeat them here.

There’s a sixth step. It’s not so much an omission as something that seems so obvious as to not need mentioning, namely that you are going to have to do something at some point. Whatever it is you want, it’s not going to just show up in your living room during a commercial break.

I didn’t completely omit that part. I made passing reference in the examples of what you might write down:

“As they make sense, I will take advantage of new opportunities….”
“I will be alert to … opportunities, and will act….”

If there is something that you desire, that means you are going to have to do something in order to get (or keep) it. Most of the time you don’t know what that something is going to be. Sometimes you may think you know, but a better opportunity shows up in the middle of your life that requires you to take action. And honestly, I think I can say from experience that the choice to pursue an opportunity may not be the most comfortable option!

But – the opportunities will arise, and when they do, you need to do something. One of the things that we all know is that your circumstances are going to change, for better or for worse. Nothing ever stays the same. If you don’t take control, then the change is out of your control, and you will have to live with whatever comes your way.

If you want your circumstances to change in a specific way for the better, then you are going to need to make the change happen.
